6.10pm - Presentation 1 - Mahzar Syed, Ara Institute of Canterbury - Integrating BIM and VDC in the Architecture Curriculum

Educators who teach Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) often face difficulties in assimilating and teaching disruptive technologies. Some of the most common problems faced in teaching are a lack of understanding of its disruptive nature, technology diffusion, technology integration etc. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one such disruptive technology which is often visualized as more of a tool rather than a disruption in the design and building construction lifecycle. Besides the steep learning curve in
learning the tools and technologies associated with BIM, often the urgency of its introduction leads to half-baked teaching and learning methodologies.

The integrated and evolving nature of BIM demands that it has to be designed as a completely interactive and engaging experience utilizing cutting-edge educational tools and technologies that can continuously adapt to industry changes and technological developments. One key factor of this engaging experience can be recognized through the ubiquitous use of mobile devices and their ability to communicate with the Internet of things (IOT) as building monitoring sensors. Thus, the creation of a Virtual Design and construction environment has become very easy, accessible and affordable implementation in any related teaching and learning methodology.

This presentation at first will introduce potential instructional design and specific innovative game-based learning methods to develop a BIM teaching and learning hub. Secondly, this webinar will also explain the design and development cycle of a complete virtual BIM environment using the newly commissioned and fully BIM compliant
Engineering & Architectural college building (Kahukura K-Block).

6.40pm - Presentation 2 - Steve Davis, Assemble - An Overview of the Establishment Phase of the BIM Process

Steve will provide an overview of the establishment phase of the BIM process, focussing on the NZ BIM Handbook's key principles.

7.00pm - Panel Discussion: Why are current procurement methods hindering the success of BIM?

The aim of this panel discussion is to highlight whether or not current procurement models are effective for the implementation of BIM and true collaborative processes. The panel includes:

- Glenn Jowett - Senior Associate BIM Delivery Lead, Beca.
- Cyrille Pennavaire - BIM Manager, Fletcher Construction
- Jeames Hanley - BIM Manager, Warren and Mahoney Architects
- Tony Biland - Senior Project Manager and BIM QA, Christchurch City Council
- Slava Mozganov - Owner, BIM CAD Eng

The discussion will be MC'd by Graham Allan, Director, Structex. There will be a microphone for use by the audience and we will be actively encouraging full audience participation for what could prove to be a lively debate.
